The Darrelle Revis drama never stops, does it? The New York Jets and their cornerback seem to be perpetually entangled in a soap opera centered around his contract. From the holdout in 2010, to a rumored potential holdout last year and this offseason, Darrelle Revis trade rumors. The Jets opened the 2013 NFL Combine by shooting down those Darrelle Revis trade rumors, though whether you buy that at face value is another story. Now it has been reported that the Jets didn't meet with the agents of Darrelle Revis, though they did meet with the representatives of many other players.
The NFL Combine brings NFL Draft prospects, coaches, team executives and agents to Indianapolis all at the same time. That means a lot of meetings between teams and agents. While the New York Jets were at the 2013 NFL Combine they met with agents for LaRon Landry, Santonio Holmes, Dustin Keller, Shonn Greene, Jeff Cumberland and Austin Howard.
Not included on that list? The agents of star cornerback Darrelle Revis. As Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports, the Jets are just three-tenths of a mile away from where Revis' agents are staying but didn't meet with them. Are we reading too much into this?
Some are taking this as a sign that the Jets don't want to pay Darrelle Revis or are still looking to trade him. But when looking at the players they did speak to, they are all free agents with the exception of Santonio Holmes. The Jets are trying to restructure their deal with Santonio Holmes to open up more cap space. If the plan at the NFL Combine was to figure out where they stand with their pending free agents and try to open up more cap space, than there wouldn't be any reason to meet with the agents for Darrelle Revis.
This is one of those stories that people are going to mold to their preconceived notions of the relationship between Darrelle Revis and the Jets. If you think it's a contentious partnership and the Jets are looking to trade Darrelle Revis, than it's pretty easy to use this in support of that. If you think all of the talk about the Jets wanting no part of Darrelle Revis is nonsense, it's also pretty easy to dismiss this as nothing to get excited about.
