Rex Ryan did what he could to put Darrelle Revis at ease today during his press conference at the 2013 NFL Combine, saying that the team isn't actively looking to send him elsewhere. The Darrelle Revis trade rumors heated up a few weeks ago with a report that Woody Johnson was interested in moving him, but Rex Ryan says the New York Jets haven't discussed such a trade. Can we buy that at face value or is it more spin from the Jets?
At the 2013 NFL Combine on Thursday, Rex Ryan did what he could to quiet down the Darrelle Revis trade rumors. The New York Jets cornerback has had a whirlwind offseason so far, from his injury rehabilitation to the trade rumors to his Twitter beef with Richard Sherman.
"Plain and simple, it's not accurate. I told (Revis) that," Rex said. "There's no validity to that trade."
It wasn't a bold statement from Rex Ryan in the actual dismissing of the rumors. He hedged his statement by saying, "Could there be a trade? Yeah, anybody could be traded… Again, we have not discussed trading Darrelle Revis." Of course that's true in the NFL, but in the past Rex Ryan has been more apt to put his foot down and stomp out rumors without a disclaimer added. He added that no team has made an offer for the cornerback.
Hopefully that will put Darrelle Revis at ease and allow him to focus on his rehab. If the Jets are planning on keeping him, they could use the Darrelle Revis we all became used to watching – or not watching, because opposing quarterbacks refused to throw at him. It would be a lot of fun to see him paired with Antonio Cromartie this season. Plus a pass rusher in the 2013 NFL Draft? The pass defense would be ridiculous.
But, if the Jets do get an offer and it would improve the team moving forward, they need to consider it given the current situation of the team and the expected contract demands of Darrelle Revis. It's not about the name on the back of the jersey, it's about the team as a whole. If trading Darrelle Revis makes the Jets a better team, and depending on the offer it can, John Idzik and Rex Ryan need to take it seriously.
