The New York Jets cut Bart Scott, Calvin Pace and a few others yesterday to clear up some cap space. In the NFL one team's trash is another team's treasure, or at least helpful for a new coach trying to establish a defensive philosophy. When Rex Ryan became head coach of the Jets in 2009 his first major acquisition was getting Bart Scott to join him, then Jim Leonhard. As the new defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, Mike Pettine might be looking to bring Bart Scott and Calvin Pace along with him.
Bart Scott may not be the same player he was when Rex Ryan pried him away from the Baltimore Ravens to be one of the pillars of his New York Jets defense, but he showed flashes of his younger self last season and still brings the attitude and intensity needed in an attacking defense. That could be helpful to new Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, who is hoping to establish a defensive identity under new head coach Doug Marrone. Calvin Pace, another player familiar with Mike Pettine and his defense, is another possible addition to the Jets' AFC East rivals.
While Bart Scott and Calvin Pace may have been overpriced for the Jets, for the right price they can help the Bills. While the pair haven't been studs on the field the past few seasons, they were still part of the No. 8 defense in the NFL. For a Buffalo defense that ranked 22nd in the NFL last season, they would be welcome additions.
Beyond the help on the field, part of a new coaching regime involves a culture change. Bart Scott has been to the playoffs plenty of times with the Ravens and the Jets. Calvin Pace went to two AFC Championship Games with the Jets. Both are used to being in an aggressive, hit-you-in-the-mouth defense. They can help Mike Pettine bring that style to Ralph Wilson Stadium.
The Jets may have cut ties with Bart Scott and Calvin Pace, but there's a good chance they end up seeing the pair twice next season.
