Loading ...The names keep coming in the discussions about possible New York Jets quarterback options to compete for Mark Sanchez, but Matt Moore is one that has been near the top of the list for a long time. Matt Moore may not be the most exciting candidate, but he could be the best fit as a steady, consistent signal. Matt Moore also has a history of getting passed over despite his success and is looking for an opportunity to compete and hopefully start. Given his career numbers, Matt Moore would probably like his chances in an open competition with Mark Sanchez.
The New York Jets are looking to establish a culture of competition under new general manager John Idzik. Part of that is finding someone to compete with Mark Sanchez at the quarterback position. Some interesting names have popped up and the search hasn't even started in earnest yet. Alex Smith might be a Jet. No one wants to see Jamarcus Russell and the Jets aren't interested. Some are clamoring for Matt Flynn.
But what about Matt Moore?
That's a question that probably could have been asked at the previous stops throughout Matt Moore's football career, from UCLA to Oregon State to the Carolina Panthers and most recently with the Miami Dolphins. Matt Moore has constantly been passed over, despite consistently winning everywhere he's been, and is on his way out the door once again. He will be looking to land with a team willing to give him a fair shot to win the starting quarterback job, and that opportunity might be with Rex Ryan, Marty Mornhinweg and the New York Jets.
Matt Moore has been in the NFL since 2007, starting his career with the Carolina Panthers before signing with the Miami Dolphins. In 39 games played he has 33 touchdowns passes, 26 interceptions, a 59.1 career completion percentage and an 80.5 quarterback rating. After winning five of his last eight games with a 2011 Miami Dolphins team that wasn't very talented, the team went ahead and drafted Ryan Tannehill in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Despite many veterans expressing their faith in Matt Moore, Ryan Tannehill won the job over him in training camp.
Matt Moore did get a win over the Jets this year after Ryan Tannehill was forced the leave the game at MetLife Stadium with an injury. He went 22 of 32 for 135 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Not bad for coming in cold off the bench for a team that finished 7-9.
If Matt Moore is interested in signing with the Jets, he's probably the right fit. He won't cost a whole lot. He's steady, not spectacular, but has been more consistent than Mark Sanchez over his career with less talent around him.
