Loading ...With all of the buzz surrounding the Darrelle Revis trade rumors, the news that former New York Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano is joining the Oakland Raiders as their assistant head coach and offensive line coach has been largely brushed aside. Tony Sparano spent one season with the Jets and is quickly headed the wrong way on the coaching ladder, going from Miami Dolphins head coach at the start of the 2011 season to Raiders offensive line coach at the start of the 2013 season.
Fired New York Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano is headed to the Oakland Raiders, where he will serve as their offensive line coach and assistant head coach. For Raiders head coach Dennis Allen, the youngest head coach in the NFL, this is a nice hire. Tony Sparano has previous head coaching experience and should be a good resource for him to lean on.
With the title of assistant head coach attached to his name, Tony Sparano is still going to be a big part of the coaching staff. He will be heavily involved in the success of the Oakland offense as the offensive line coach, set to work alongside new offensive coordinator Greg Olson.
Nick Gill of Raiders 101 provided his take on the Oakland Raiders hiring Tony Sparano:
"In Oakland, he also receives the assistant head coach title. That could indicate he will have a large hand in the offense along with new offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Olson has a quarterback's coach background and Sparano has an offensive line coach background, which should mesh well. That would leave head coach Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver to run the defense, which is their backgrounds.
Sparano incorporated the wildcat formation into his offense in Miami with good success. That creativity should serve him well in Oakland with running back Darren McFadden and quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Pryor probably will not be the starter, but could be effective in packages within the offense. In his four years as head coach of the Dolphins, Sparano's teams finished 11th, 4th, 21st, and 11th in the NFL in rushing yards for the season."
Many Jets fans are just happy to see Tony Sparano go elsewhere. He failed as an offensive coordinator with the Jets, but it will be interesting to see if he can rebound with the Raiders and get his coaching career back on track.
