The New York Jets will officially introduce John Idzik as their general manager today at 11 am during a press conference held at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. After an interesting search that provide some twists and turns, the Jets ended up hiring John Idzik away from the Seattle Seahawks as their new general manager. Today's press conference will likely be overshadowed by the buzz surrounding the report of a possible Darrelle Revis trade, which is apparently on the agenda of the new Jets general manager.
The John Idzik press conference today is a step towards the future for the New York Jets. Mike Tannenbaum has taken the fall for the team's failures these past two seasons, and now John Idzik will be tasked with cleaning up the mess. There are some good pieces in place, but it is a mess: a tough salary cap situation with some obvious talent deficiencies. That will force the Jets to be creative as they look to return to the playoffs.
While the Jets will try to keep the focus on the introduction of John Idzik, the Darrelle Revis questions will by lobbed up early and often once the floor is opened up. Woody Johnson and company will surely deflect them away without giving a real answer, but it's pretty standard operating procedure for the Jets to have a story like this leak just prior to a scheduled press conference.
John Idzik will have the final say on personnel decisions and it will be his job to evaluate the market for a Darrelle Revis trade and decide whether the team's best interest is to hang on to the star cornerback or move him for other pieces. With teams likely lining up right now to make offers the Jets will be in a position to get nice value for him. The success of that move, or the decision to sit tight, could be an early defining moment for John Idzik as Jets general manager.
Welcome to the Jets, John Idzik. Let's see how you plan to turn this franchise back around.
