John Idzik knows he has some hefty tasks coming up as the new general manager of the New York Jets. He will need to make some big roster moves, fix the team's salary cap situation, and have a good draft to get the Jets going in the right direction. Jets fans should believe in Idzik and his responsibilities.
Prior to stepping into his new role, Idzik has experience in rebuilding other football teams. He spent a great amount of time on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' staff. In his twelve NFL seasons there, he served as the team's pro personnel assistant, director of football administration, and assistant general manager. Worthy of note in that time span are Tampa Bay's five playoff appearances, which include two division titles and an NFC Championship which led to the Buccaneers' lone Super Bowl victory. The Buccaneers had 51 Pro Bowlers during his twelve year tenure, which equates to a little over 4 Pro Bowlers per season.
After his time in Tampa Bay, Idzik moved on to the Arizona Cardinals where he served as the senior director of football operations for three years. The Cardinals would eventually reach make their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. He then stayed in the division and headed northwest to become the vice president of football administration for the Seattle Seahawks. Even though the first few years were rough, the team rebounded and reached the Divisional Round in two of the last three seasons. There seems to be a trend going with John Idzik and the teams he works for. Idzik has had a big role in building each team he served for and helped build winners. There is no reason to believe he cannot do it in New York.
Another reason to get excited is that he has no ties with anyone in the New York Jets organization. Hiring a current Jets employee as the general manager would have made the situation a lot worse. The organization will realize that he has built winners and, hopefully for Jets fans, let him take all the personnel responsibilities. Idzik knows what it takes to win, and the fact that he was not in the organization to begin with will only help him as he will bring a new culture and mindset to the team that they desperately need.
For those of you curious about the draft this year, Idzik is a safe bet. A few players drafted in his tenures with the three teams mentioned include Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Larry Fitzgerald, and Russell Wilson. He has hit the jackpot numerous times and knows talent when he sees it. Like a wise man once said, history repeats itself.
This is a great hire for the New York Jets, and it is definitely a step in the right direction. He has never actually served as a general manager, but what he has done will give Jets Nation a reason to believe.
