The New York Jets have another defection on the coaching staff, with linebackers coach Bob Sutton headed to the Kansas City Chiefs to be their new defensive coordinator. Bob Sutton is the eighth coach to leave the Jets, either by choice or because they were fired by the organization. The ninth coach to leave is Anthony Weaver, the assistant defensive line coach, who will join Mike Pettine with the Buffalo Bills. The tenth coach to leave, Jim O'Neil, will also be joining the Bills staff.
The reporting of the defections from the New York Jets coaching staff has been interesting to watch. When coaches leave for promotions with other organizations, it's typically seen as a compliment. On the defensive side of the football, every coach that has left has advanced their career. Even Mime Pettine, still holding the title of defensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills as he did with the Jets, will no longer be viewed as the right hand man to Rex Ryan defensively and will have more freedom to truly shape an NFL defense to his liking.
Bob Sutton is the latest to join that group, with the Jets linebackers coach headed to the Kansas City Chiefs to be their defensive coordinator. Bob Sutton joined the Jets in 2000, coaching the linebackers throughout his tenure while also holding other various responsibilities throughout his time in New York. Sutton served as defensive coordinator in 2006-2008, prior to Rex Ryan's arrival. Before working with the Jets, Bob Sutton coached the Army football team from 1991-1999.
In other news, former Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano will interview for the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line job. That would be a demotion from his perch as offensive coordinator this season, reflecting the league-wide view of the Jets offense. Tony Sparano has gone from head coach to offensive coordinator, and now potentially down to offensive line coach, over the course of two offseasons.
