In 2007 the New York Jets suffered their only losing record, 4-12, during the three year tenure of former Bill Belichick assistant coach, Eric Mangini. The Jets made two key acquisitions during the 2007 NFL Draft that still resonate to the current squad.
Now former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum really earned his nickname of "Trader Mike" during the 2007 NFL Draft. During the first round Tannenbaum traded up 11 spots with the Carolina Panthers in order to select cornerback Darrelle Revis, who became the best shutdown cornerback in the league. In the second round the Jets were able to make a trade with the Green Bay Packers to move up to pick number 47 and select David Harris. He would take over for an injured Jonathan Vilma in the last nine games and become a tackling machine ever since. The Jets made one other move that season in trading picks with the Chicago Bears and moving down to be able to add running back Thomas Jones to replace the retiring Curtis Martin.
All of these off the field acquisitions still didn't help the team coming off a 10-6 campaign in 2006 that led to a wildcard playoff berth, but a loss to the rival Patriots. The Jets suffered a six-game losing streak during the middle of the season and nothing the "Man-genius" coach could do stemmed the tide of losses. Mangini and the Jets recovered in 2008, finishing 9-7, but he would not be retained for 2009 which began the still-current Rex Ryan era. The Jets unveiled the throwback Titans blue and gold uniforms for the first time during the 2007 season, going 1-1 while wearing them. Not many fans seemed to enjoy them, but I do happen to like how they looked back to their origins in the AFL, and the even cleaner looking white Titans uniforms unveiled during the 50th anniversary season.
In the final installment of this Look Back series we will add an addendum look back at the 2012 season that, of course, saw the Jets finish at 6-10 and out of the playoffs for a second straight season under Rex Ryan.
