It's popular to call the New York Jets a circus. The perception most likely doesn't exactly match up with reality, but the Jets do have a quarterback situation that can be described as a true circus. The player they hoped would be their franchise quarterback, Mark Sanchez, has officially imploded. To make matters worse, he's just about unmovable due to the contract extension the Jets gave him in the offseason. The backup who was passed over to start this week, Tim Tebow, reportedly wants out. Greg McElroy has patiently waited to start this week after spending most of his young NFL career in street clothes with a clipboard in his hands. Finally, whispers about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mike Vick have surfaced for next season.
The New York Jets are in a position no franchise wants to be in. It's obvious that the player they put their hopes in, Mark Sanchez, isn't the guy. They won't be in position to draft a quarterback that can be expected to be a franchise-type player because this year's draft class doesn't seem to have one. Their backup quarterback, Tim Tebow, isn't a very good passer, and the quarterback who will start this week, Greg McElroy, is unproven and was drafted to be a backup.
The Jets will hope that Greg McElroy does well these next two weeks and could possibly make himself a real candidate for the starting job next season. Even if he does, it would be tough to imagine the Jets going into next season with Greg McElroy penciled in as the starter. If the talent on the roster isn't changed at the quarterback position, it would have to be a competition with Mark Sanchez.
Or, the Jets could bring in a new quarterback. The name that seems to be floating around the most is Mike Vick of the Philadelphia Eagles. Mike Vick just made public comments that he's not a backup and wants to start, so he'll likely be leaving the Eagles. Another quarterback who is not a great passer in terms of accuracy, one who depends on his running ability quite a bit and has been injury prone.
It's all crazy, as it always seems to be with the Jets. The Jets would probably be better served to target Matt Moore, Jason Campbell or even Brady Quinn. Matt Moore was never given a fair shot down with the Miami Dolphins, despite showing the ability to consistently win games. Jason Campbell is an average journeyman quarterback and Brady Quinn has bounced around on bad teams, then was stuck behind current Jets backup Tim Tebow.
