The New York Jets got another needed victory Sunday, 17-10 over the Jaguars in Jacksonville. This puts their record at 6-7 and in eighth place in the overall AFC standings so the possibility still exists of making the playoffs. They will face the Titans in Tennessee next Monday night.
After a three and out by the Jets, Chad Henne got the Jaguars driving and ate up much of the clock for the period. When they had gotten into the red zone, Garrett McIntyre drilled Henne, who's pass went sailing up in the air to be intercepted by Bart Scott. Mardy Gilyard got involved early catching two passes early from Mark Sanchez one for 11 yards on second down and 12. The Jets were forced to punt a second time. It was noticed that both Tim Tebow and Joe McKnight were missing their Jets uniform logos, on the chest over the area of the heart, due to the addition of the 50th Anniversary Hall of Fame logo to all jerseys.
When the Jets got the ball back early in the second, Sanchez found Jeremy Kerley for 12 yards on third down and three. Bilal Powell had consecutive carries that lead to third and about five. When Sanchez targeted Stephen Hill, he was interfered with but also slipped on the wet field, because it had rained before the game. He went down holding his right knee, and we would fear it was very serious based upon Hill's reaction on the field. A second pass interference penalty, this time trying to find Kerley, led to yet another first down. A few plays later the recently picked up Jason Babin hit Sanchez, who fumbled, recovered by Babin. Eventually Josh Scobee connected on a 31-yard field goal to open the scoring. The Jets started another drive with a 17-yard pass play to Chaz Schilens on a designed roll out. Shonn Greene got about five yards, then Sanchez scrambled for eight. Kerley made a catch along sideline and started to fight for yards, but was stripped by Cox. Dwight Lowery picked it up and ran it in, but was ruled down by contact as Kerley got a hand on Lowery fighting for the ball. The Jags got the ball back and drove to try for a 55-yard field goal by Scobee, who missed left this time.
After the Jaguars went three and out the Jets got a scoring drive going with a 10-yard catch from Schilens, then consecutive runs by Greene for eight yards and three more for back-to-back first downs. Greene ran twice more, first nearly nine yards then 5 more for yet another first down. Sanchez found Kerley along sideline for six yards, then Powell ran down inside five yard line. We spotted Hayden Smith in during that Powell run. Greene ran again down inside the one yard line, then plunged in on next play for touchdown. The teams traded punts and after the Jags got the ball back again, Muhammad Wilkerson sacked Henne to end the drive. On the next two Jags punts Kerley got chance to return ball and got just inside Jags territory at 47 yard line. After the first punt return Sanchez on play action found Konrad Reuland for five yards. Greene rumbled for 15 yards down to 28 yard line. Nick Folk connected from 44 yards out after the drive stalled to put the Jets up 10-3. David Harris ended the Jags following drive when he took down Henne for loss/sack after the Jets almost dropped Henne right on the goal line. Powell got the carries on the next Jets drive, first for almost seven yards, then seven more to get a first down.
Powell continued being the hot hand at running back with 14 more yards on next carry. Then Powell got five more yards on second down, then 10 more to put the Jets on the doorstep again at the four yard line. Powell then went in for touchdown on the next play to put the Jets up 17-3. On a pass play from Henne, Antonio Cromartie took a glancing blow to the head from teammate Yeremiah Bell and left the game briefly. Shortly after that Quinton Coples dumped Henne for yet another sack, but a facemask penalty kept the drive alive for Jags. Montell Owens would cut the lead to seven when he ran it from 32 yards out. After back-to-back three and outs for both teams Sanchez found Cumberland in the middle of the field on a third and nine play for 37 yards to get the Jets to midfield. The Jets could not convert on third down after and punted back to Jacksonville. Jordan Shipley beat Kyle Wilson on a fourth and 15 play as the Jags drove for the possible tying score. Henne was hit as he threw by Coples and Ellis Lankster intercepted the pass to clinch the game.
The offense continues to struggle with Sanchez at the helm as he overthrew his receivers early and often. The running game bailed him out during the second half as they chopped away repeatedly at Jaguars and finally got bigger chunks of yardage. If Sanchez cannot find some consistency with his throws, then despite the fact that the Jets will be favored in there remaining three games, they will hard pressed to win even one of those.Tags: Antonio Cromartie, Bilal Powell, Dwight Lowery, Football, Garrett McIntyre, Jeremy Kerley, Mark Sanchez, Muhamm, Muhammad Wilkerson, New York, New York Jets, NFL, Quinton Coples, Shonn Greene, Stephen Hill
