Loading ...The New York Jets are still reeling from a 34-0 loss at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers, and the schedule doesn't get any easier with the Houston Texans coming to town for Monday Night Football this week. The Jets always seem to play better with their backs against the wall, but can they dig deep and pull out an unexpected performance once again? How can the Jets make this a game?
The New York Jets aren't looking for moral victories, but they need something to build on. Another complete, devastating loss would send them into a tailspin that could permanently wreck the season and cost some people their jobs within the organization. The Jets have to find a way to compete this Monday and provide some hope that things can get better. How do they get that done?
Find a Running Game: One of the best ways to create a competitive game is to run the football effectively. Easier said than done, but controlling the ball on the ground chews up clock, moves the chains and keeps the game from getting out of hand. The Jets lived by that strategy for the first two season under Rex Ryan and wanted to do the same this season. The offensive line needs to dig in and start moving bodies up front and the Jets have to find a running back who can pick up yards. At a certain point it becomes more about desire than talent and the Jets have to realize they are at that point.
Eliminate Turnovers: Want to throw the game away? Give away the football. The Jets have done that way too much this season and have paid for it. They have to protect the ball, and that starts with Mark Sanchez.
Stop the Run: Games are won in the trenches, and as mentioned above it eventually becomes a matter of digging in and refusing to lose. Talent, strength and other factors play a part, but effort and desire can be huge against competitors with comparable attributes. It's time for the Jets to dig in and stop taking what other teams serve up to them in terms of physicality.
