JETS 101

The New York Jets have signed wide receiver Jason Hill, most recently a member of the Denver Broncos. If you recall that name, it's not because of anything he did on the field. Jason Hill is a recognizable name because he made a ludicrous statement last season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, saying that Darrelle Revis is overhyped. Jason Hill backed up those words by not playing in the game against the Jets that Sunday.

The New York Jets could use a replacement for injured wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Jason Hill isn't it. The Jets aren't going to find one at this point, seeing as there isn't a line of No. 1 wide receivers waiting to be signed. So, the Jets settled for Jason Hill. And Jets fans will now have to settle for watching a receiving corps featuring Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill (when healthy), Chaz Schilens and… Jason Hill.

Jason Hill has 76 career receptions in six NFL seasons. In 10 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, he posted 25 catches for 367 yards and three touchdowns. He was released by the Denver Broncos at the end of training camp this season and remained a free agent until he was signed by the Jets today.

There are some talented wide receivers out there, maybe not true top wide receivers, but former big-time playmakers. Included in that list are Terrell Owens, Plaxico Burress and even Chad Johnson. Not ideal solutions, but receivers with better track records than Jason Hill. The argument about distractions associated with those receivers could be made, but the Jets needed to make a talent decision.

The Jets have also signed fullback Lex Hilliard, who spent some time with Tony Sparano as members of the Miami Dolphins. The team released wide receiver Patrick Turner and signed Jordan White, one of their 2012 NFL Draft Picks, to the practice squad.
