On Sunday the New York Jets record dropped to 2-2 after an embarrassing 34-0 shut-out at home versus the San Francisco 49ers. The Jets turned the ball over four times, twice by quarterback Mark Sanchez, and despite the loss of Darrelle Revis the pass defense didn't seem affected. The run defense was another story altogether with tackling still being an issue.
First Quarter:
The Niners received the opening kickoff and quarterback Alex Smith tried to target Michael Crabtree early since Kyle Wilson was in coverage. Wilson drew a pass interference call despite that Crabtree also held Wilson. The Jets got the ball for their first drive and Mark Sanchez found Santonio Holmes for 11 yards and a first down to get things started. Sanchez also found Chaz Schilens along the sideline for first down, since he started for Stephen Hill. The drive ended when Aldon Smith sacked Sanchez. Somewhat surprisingly Bilal Powell was the starter at running back since he was on the field for Jets first offensive play.
Second Quarter:
Colin Kaepernick was used a bit during game in the Niners version of wildcat as he ran in the opening score to put San Francisco up 7-0. When the Jets got the ball back Schilens got nine-plus yards on a pass from Sanchez, then Shonn Greene got the first down on next play. Vlad Ducasse saw playing time at left guard on that drive and in the third and fourth quarters. Sanchez connected with Holmes for six yards and Bilal Powell ran for two more. Tim Tebow threw a jump pass on third down that found Dedrick Epps, but it was ruled a fumble even though Epps didn't really get both feet down after the reception, with Carlos Rogers recovering the fumble. The Jets held the Niners after back-to-back sacks of Smith by Bryan Thomas then Calvin Pace. David Akers missed a 55-yard field goal attempt. Another Mark Sanchez sack ended the next Jets drive and then a fumble by Sanchez was recovered by Justin Smith on the Jets next series. Akers made a 36-yard field goal to put San Francisco up 10-0 at the half.
Third Quarter:
The Jets started off well as Sanchez found Jeff Cumberland along the sideline on second down and eight for a first down, then Schilens for another. Patrick Willis picked Sanchez on a tip around the line of scrimmage on a screen pass attempt that certainly would have gained the Jets big yardage. David Akers missed again though from 40 yards. Kyle Wilson was a step behind in coverage all day, getting beaten by Mario Manningham that just missed a big play for the Niners as Smith overthrew Mario off his fingertips. After the Jets went three and out the Niners next drive ended with a Frank Gore one yard touchdown on fourth down.
Fourth Quarter:
Near the beginning of the final stanza Santonio Holmes made a catch along the sideline that he fumbled as he went down holding his knee. Carlos Rogers recovered and ran it in for another San Francisco touchdown. The injury was non-contact, similar to Darrelle Revis, but later it would be learned it was hit foot that was injured not the knee. Holmes did not return. David Akers finally connected on a third 40-yard field goal attempt to make it 27-0. Robert Malone had a punt blocked by Larry Grant that set up the Niners at the Jets four yard line. Kendall Hunter ran it in to cap the scoring at 34-0 even though Colin Kaepernick could have scored on a botched play where no one on defense reacted to his run to the right.
The New York Jets will remain at MetLife Stadium for game two of their three game homestand this coming Monday against the undefeated Houston Texans. Now they must see if the can muster up any offense without Santonio Holmes, who will likely be lost for some time with his foot injury.
