The New York Jets were hoping to keep rolling in Week Two against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but ended up face planting with a 27-10 defeat on the road at Heinz Field. There is always good and bad developments from every football game, but with the loss we will start out with the disappointing stuff.
Tackling: The Jets had issues wrapping up Ben Roethlisberger all day, which led to some big plays and third down conversions for the Steelers. As a result, Pittsburgh was able to keep drives alive and clearly won the time of possession battle. The Jets defense was tired late and had trouble getting off the field as they couldn't bring down Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer.
Offensive Rhythm: The Jets had trouble sustaining drives after the first quarter, with Mark Sanchez seemingly out of sync with his wide receivers and the running game stacked up by a tough Steelers front seven. Protection issues also popped up, with pressure limiting what the Jets could do down the field.
Tim Tebow: The Jets needed a spark on offense and the injury to Shonn Greene hampered the running game for a while. Aren't these the times when Tim Tebow is supposed to come out in the wildcat and try to create something? Tebow came in a ripped off a 22-yard run, but wasn't used again.
Keep Your Eye on the Ball: A major turning point for the Jets yesterday was when Jeremy Kerley muffed a punt. The ball hit him in the facemask and squirted away after the Jets defense forced a punt and was about to set the offense up with good field position. Kyle Wilson was going to be called for a block in the back if Kerley had fielded it cleanly, but instead the Jets defense was forced to take the field again. The Jets forced a three-and-out and a punt, but the turnovers completely changed field position and the Jets offense was stuck at its own six yard line.
The Jets need to dust themselves off and get ready to take on the Miami Dolphins this week. The Jets are a more talented team than the Dolphins, but Miami had a nice showing yesterday and is almost never an easy out.
