The New York Jets have upgraded their collection of competitors for the starting right tackle position just days before training camp is set to open this Thursday at SUNY Cortland, acquiring tackle Jeff Otah from the Carolina Panthers for a conditional draft pick. It's a good chance for the Jets to take on a talented player entering the final year of his contract, without having to give up much in return. Jeff Otah will compete with Wayne Hunter for the starting right tackle job.

That will fall on Rex Ryan, Tony Sparano and offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo, who will be looking to turn that promise into results on the field. The Jets will not release Wayne Hunter, but they were concerned about the position and jumped at the opportunity to grab a talent like Jeff Otah from the Carolina Panthers.

Jeff Otah was a first round pick in 2008 but has struggled with injuries throughout his NFL career. Entering the final year of his contract, he should have plenty of motivation to have a good season and a change of scenery could also be beneficial. Jeff Otah's left knee has given him trouble multiple times and is definitely something to keep an eye on. With Wayne Hunter still expected to be on the team, the Jets do have an insurance policy in the event of a re-injury to the knee.

Jeff Otah is a physical presence at 6-6, 340, and if he is motivated and healthy he's a potential steal. Those are two big questions that have yet to be answered. The Jets front office does deserve some credit for taking a good gamble on a very talented player. If they score on this move, they will score big and could have the makings of a dominant offensive line.

The team announced the trade Monday. It is not expected to result in the release of Wayne Hunter, but a healthy and motivated Jeff Otah will likely relegate him to backup duty.
