Loading ...New York Jets backup quarterback and wildcat operator Tim Tebow may be recognized as the "nice guy" of the NFL, a player whose interests remain squarely in his love of the game and his religious beliefs, but that doesn't mean Tim Tebow can't talk a little smack. Last week, Tim Tebow was speaking to some Florida Gators boosters and referenced some conversations he had with Brady Quinn when both were on the Denver Broncos. Brady Quinn liked to boast about playing at Notre Dame and Tim Tebow and other Broncos teammates would rip on him about it.
It's important to note that New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow was speaking to University of Florida boosters, so obviously he's going to build up the program in comparison to other high-profile programs around the country. Notre Dame being a nationally-recognized program and Brady Quinn being a fellow quarterback on the Denver Broncos, it became an easy anecdote for Tebow to feed to those in attendance.
As Larry Brown Sports reported, Tim Tebow loved to shut down Brady Quinn anytime he tried to build up Notre Dame:
“He would brag about his university, how great it was. Most of us in the locker room were like, ‘C’mon, we all had opportunities. We chose not to go there.’ … But he talked so much about his university that it became easy. I’d say, ‘Your whole team had one guy who ran under a 5.0 40 [yard dash]. Our kicker ran under 5.0.’ ”
Tim Tebow didn't mention Brady Quinn by name during that little story, not sure exactly what we should read into that. Was he trying to avoid this becoming a "Tim Tebow trashes Brady Quinn" story, did he not like Quinn, or did he actually forget his name?
Sorry, that last one wasn't nice. I actually like Brady Quinn.
What makes this story funny is that there's actually truth in what Tim Tebow said – Notre Dame's lack of team speed crippled them during Brady Quinn's tenure and has been an ongoing issue for the Fighting Irish. It's worth noting that Brian Kelly has done a better job of recruiting some speed as well as some legitimate big-time offensive and defensive linemen, another issue in years past.
The other thing that makes this funny? It's Tim Tebow talking trash. Obviously everybody ribs each other in the locker room, but Tim Tebow made a public statement that took a legitimate shot at the Charlie Weis-era Notre Dame teams.
Maybe he'll fit right in with the Jets after all.
