The New York Giants defense may have taken a big hit with the loss of linebacker Jon Beason for 12 weeks, but that has not sullied their overall outlook on the season. In fact, defensive captain Antrel Rolle made a bold and unimpeded prediction on Friday, saying Big Blue will absolutely make a run at the Super Bowl here in 2014.
"We're definitely going to make a run at [the Super Bowl] this year," Rolle said during a spot on ESPN First Take.
While Rolle stopped short of saying they'd win the Super Bowl this year, he did express a rookie-like excitement over the restructured secondary. And when asked to rank the NFC East teams from best to worst, he predictably picked Big Blue to lead the bunch.
The one thing Rolle didn't do during his First Take interview was take the bait. He was asked and pressured to suggest the Dallas Cowboys were a "joke" here in 2014, but unlike their team owner, Jerry Jones, he politely passed on the question.
While some fans will undoubtedly get up in arms over Rolle's prediction, it's not as if he could have said "The Giants will make a run at the No. 1 overall pick this season" or something alone those lines. He was asked a question and answered it honestly. Then again, Rolle always believes the Giants are the best team in the league based off of their talent alone.
Hopefully his latest prediction will ring true. And considering the Giants have won the Super Bowl each of the last two times a LeBron James-led team lost the NBA Finals, they may only be one game away from cosmically being set up for that again.
