Happy Monday, New York Giants fans! The new week is upon us and with it, Big Blue returns to Organized Team Activities (OTAs). They will hold their final four OTA practices beginning with one today and then again on Tuesday, Thursday (media access) and Friday. Next week will be mandatory mini-camp (17th-19th). In the mean time, enjoy that first coffee of the new week over the following headlines.
They arrived from all corners of the NFL, from near (Jameel McClain, Baltimore), and far (Walter Thurmond, Seattle; Rashad Jennnings, Oakland) and nearly everywhere in between (Geoff Schwartz, Kansas City). For the past seven weeks, the 14 newcomers — veteran free agents who played elsewhere in 2013 — were immersed in the Giants’ offseason program, and in 10 days they will go their separate ways until they must report July 21 for training camp.
As football information is poured into them, there’s a different kind of nourishment needed to connect this collection of disparate athletes.
“I’m talking simple things," McClain explained recently to The Post. “I’m talking life. I’m talking your kids, what you like to eat, which foot you like to plant off best with, the right or the left, so this way I know if we get to that side I’ll give you the side you like."
McClain is talking about bonding.
Former New York Giants lineman Luke Petitgout, who allegedly slapped his wife Jennifer Petitgout and slugged a man who was chatting to her at a Midtown lounge, has been ordered by a court to stay away from his spouse.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound ex-tackle who played for the Giants until 2006, was arrested and arraigned for misdemeanor assault charges after he allegedly burst into 48 Lounge on Thursday night, charged her table, sucker-punched a man in the eye and hit Jennifer with an open hand.
On Friday, Jennifer obtained a temporary restraining order which states, “Defendant slapped plaintiff in the face and proceeded to strike one of her friends repeatedly. Defendant has also threatened plaintiff’s life.”
Odell Beckham Jr.’s first month as a Giant certainly has been an eventful one.
The LSU wide receiver and first-round draft pick was held out of voluntary practices Thursday because of tight hamstrings that coach Tom Coughlin said could sideline Beckham even longer this summer.
Then there was the bizarre case of the “model” named Erica Mendez — who may or may not exist and might actually be a man impersonating a woman online — who claimed to be engaged to Beckham and to have traveled the world with him before walking in on a threesome.
“It was all a joke to me,” Beckham said after the 90-minute workout at the Giants’ practice facility. “I heard about it a long time ago and just laughed and thought it was funny. When it slowly, slowly progressed, I was like, ‘This is not true, this person is just doing whatever.’"
