Retired New York Giants QB Phil Simms on Eli Manning: Offensive Change Won’t Be Tough for Him

Retired Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and current ESPN analyst, Ron Jaworski, recently said an offensive philosophy change will be difficult for New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, while retired NFL quarterback Rich Gannon believes it's a major risk. But retired Giants signal caller and two-time Super Bowl champion, Phil Simms, doesn't buy into either of those theories. Rather, Simms feels the transition will be relatively seamless for Manning and that he'll likely have a lot of fun with it.

"I don't think it's going to be tough for him," Simms told Newsday. "It's going to be new information, a new way to do things, but there will be a lot of the same plays that every offense runs, and there will be a new voice telling him and different ways of running those plays."

Simms recalled his late career when he had to learn a new offensive system, and even after 15 years in the league, he felt revitalized at the time. It's something he expects Manning to experience as they get deeper and deeper into the learning process, and something he feels will, quite possibly, extend the two-time Super Bowl MVP's career.

"I learned a new system in my 15th year, and it was awesome," Simms added. "It will be for Eli like it was for me. You have to win the new coach over. He's going to have to do things faster than everybody else [on the team], and he's going to have to prove himself all over again."

Manning has never been shy about being challenged, and he's had his own input into this new offense — nothing is occurring that he wasn't fully prepared for. And despite some of the nay-saying, we're inclined to agree with Simms more so than Jaws. If anything, we would expect Manning to thrive in this West Coast-type offense so long as everyone can stay healthy and the offensive line comes together.

It’s still going to depend on how well … or how badly … the OL performs.

With the quicker reads necessary with the new offense , this revamped line should not have to block for so long and I think they will do much better .

I always liked Simms and now that he ObvIously read my comment in the last article and agrees with me about Eli , I like him even more . I mean lets face it , on the other side Jaws played for the Iggles for crying out loud . Hes never going to say anything complimentary about Eli unless hes a Super Bowl MVP .
