The lull of the NFL offseason has been anything but with the arrest of Darren Sharper on chargers of rape, the results of the investigation into Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin and the announcement that Michael Sam will, likely, become the NFL's first openly gay player. But as those stories dominate headlines, Giants 101 offers the following team-specific stories (plus one of Kate Mara) for your lazy Saturday morning.
The annual NFL Scouting Combine is a job fair like none other.
For an entire week, key front-office personnel from all 32 member clubs will be on hand to observe and interview more than 400 college prospects who have declared for the league’s annual player selection meeting, or "draft," as it’s more commonly known.
With the New York Giants having a load of needs at virtually every position, here’s a look at the positions they might be targeting when they attend the combine.
Former Morehead State standout Phil Simms, who spent 15 seasons with the National Football League's New York Giants, will be featured at the football program's fundraiser on Saturday, March 29. The event will take place inside MSU's Academic-Athletic Center.
The fundraiser is scheduled to begin with a meet and greet session at 6 p.m. Dinner will follow at approximately 7 p.m. Dinner tickets are $75 per person (which includes a $50 contribution). Dinner, plus the meet and greet, runs $150 per person (which includes a $125 contribution).
The Denver Broncos have to start thinking about making tough decisions for the 2014 free agency period, and one decision that no one wants to have to make is letting go of Eric Decker.
The free agent receiver and former third round pick is expected to make a splash on the market in March, and the Broncos will have a huge decision to make.
Taking a look at free agent receivers this year, one name that intrigues me is Hakeem Nicks, who would likely take a relatively team-friendly two or three-year deal to cash in again when he is 28 or 29 years old.
"Mount Rushmore" was a big thing on ESPN Wednesday. LeBron James spoke about his belief that he will end up on the NBA's Mount Rushmore, meaning one of its four all-time great figures, and so we spent some time on various platforms debating other Mount Rushmores. Jeff Saturday went on "SportsCenter," for instance, and gave his all-time foursome of NFL offensive linemen.
So we had this idea to look at the New York Giants' Mount Rushmore and who would be on that. I put it to my Twitter followers, and in a very unscientific poll of responses, this is what you gave me:
Lawrence Taylor, 42 votes
Eli Manning, 30 votes
Michael Strahan, 23 votes
Bill Parcells, 17 votes
The actress, who stars as Zoe Barnes, the political blogger and season one mistress of Congressman Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), thinks season two of the series will be just as good — even though she hasn't seen it yet.
"(Show creator) Beau Willimon has a very big imagination," Mara told GQ. "And he and our writing staff, I think they really pulled through this season. Because it’s hard to top all the things that happened last season. Last year, before season one came out, I had seen all the episodes; this year I haven’t, so I’m just as excited to watch it like anyone else. Still, I think it's just as surprising and addictive. Hopefully, we'll see."
