In total, the New York Giants currently have 11 players listed on Injured Reserve (IR). That list, of course, does not account for players like running back Andre Brown, who started the season on short-term IR, or players like wide receiver Ramses Barden and linebacker Dan Connor, who were placed on IR but later waived/released.
The Giants reached the current 11-man mark on Tuesday when they finally decided it was time to shut down cornerback Corey Webster, who had been dealing with lingering ankle and groin injuries. However, that list may soon swell to at least 12 men with wide receiver Victor Cruz facing a possible season-ending IR designation of his own.
In Sunday's 23-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Cruz suffered both a concussion and knee sprain in the third quarter. He was, obviously, removed from the game and would not return. And, thus far, there's been no indication whatsoever that he will return in 2013; whereas, the addition of wide receiver Julian Talley would seem to indicate the season is over for Cruz.
Should Cruz miss the final two games of the season, he will finish with 998 receiving yards — his lowest total since he burst onto the scene in 2011, and the first time in his NFL career he's failed to eclipse 1,000 yards. He would also finish the season with only four touchdowns — another career low — after being held scoreless in each of his last 10 games.
Needless to say, this was not the season Cruz envision after signing a five-year, $43 million deal with the Giants this offseason.
Prior to the IR designations of both running back Brandon Jacobs and the aforementioned Corey Webster, the Giants were near the top of the league in money on IR. Also not including Dan Connor and Ramses Barden, the Giants had $19.7 million on the books resting on season-ending IR. With the addition or Jacobs and Webster, that numbers increases to approximately $25.6 million. And, should Cruz also land on IR, that number would increase to approximately $28.12 million — good for second in the NFL behind only the St. Louis Rams ($28.8 million).
Note: Tight end Michael Palmer was also waived off of IR, while offensive linemen Chris DeGeare and Selvish Capers, cornerbacks Antonio Dennard and Laron Scott, running back Da'Rel Scott and wide receivers Kris Adams and Keith Carlos were all waived/injured.
