Jake Ballard has been waiting for the chance to get back into the NFL after being cut in the summer by the New England Patriots. On Monday, he finally found that team that was willing to give him an opportunity again.
Darren Urban of Cardinals.com reported that the Arizona Cardinals will sign the 25-year-old tight end to a one-year contract for the remainder of the 2013 season; they also have cut tight end D.J. Jefferson in order to make room for Ballard on the roster.
Ballard is the former tight end of the New York Giants who broke onto the scene in 2011 and was playing well for the team until he tore his ACL in Super Bowl XLVI, which ended his 2012 season since he needed the year to recover. Later that year, the Giants placed Ballard on waivers and was claimed by the Patriots, who stashed him as roster depth to see if he could contribute for 2013 knowing that he would miss all of the 2012 year.
The Giants were initially trying to put Ballard on season-ending injured reserve, but in order to do so before the season started, Ballard had to be exposed to waivers, and thus, New England decided to pry him away from the Giants, a move the team never expected. However, Ballard never played a regular season game for the team as he was cut during the final week of preseason.
In his one and only season in the NFL, Ballard had 38 catches for 604 yards and four touchdowns for the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Ohio State.
