Denver Broncos head coach John Fox will need to undergo heart surgery this week in Charlotte to replace an aortic valve in his heart and will need to miss at least four-to-six weeks while recovering from the operation.
Fox, who is the former New York Giants, was playing golf in North Carolina near his offseason home in Charlotte during the Broncos bye week and was said to be feeling dizzy during it and was taken to the hospital to get checked out. It was then that doctors told him that he couldn't put off the surgery any longer; which he had done earlier in the year to continue coaching.
The team has not announced an interim coach while Fox is at home recovering from the surgery, although it is speculated that Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio could be the team's coach since he has experience as a head coach when he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Fox released a statement which was reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN on early Sunday afternoon to thank all of the Broncos fans and organization for their support and looks forward to coming back to coaching the Broncos to what looks like to be their third straight trip to the postseason.
"I sincerely appreciate all of the support from friends, Denver Broncos fans and so many around the league today," Fox said in a statement released by the team Saturday night. "Although I am disappointed I must take some time away from the team to attend to this pre-existing health condition, I understand that it's the right thing to do. I have great confidence in our coaches and players, who are fully committed to our goals. I look forward to returning to coaching as soon as possible."
