Lately, it’s all about the 15 interceptions and the 0-6 start for the New York Giants quarterback, Eli Manning. Not much was ado when he surpassed Super Bowl XXI MVP quarterback Phil Simms’ all-time passing yardage (33,462) on October 27th, 2013.
In the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles, Manning hit 33,694 career yards, becoming the Giants’ all-time passing leader. He did that with his second pass of the game, by the way. He already has the Giants’ records for attempts, completions and touchdowns (2783/4764 and 221 TDs as the Giants enter a week nine bye). The offensive captain isn’t focused on any of his ongoing records. He looks ahead to the welcome stretch of home games, first against the Oakland Raiders.
“We’re looking forward to that stretch,” Manning told Mike Francesa this week on WFAN radio. “It’s nice to have these home games, and we were kind of excited about it two weeks ago. We said, all right, hey, we’ve got Minnesota at home. Then we have a short trip to Philly. It’s kind of nice – one o’clock, a bus ride away and then a bye week and then three home games. We have a nice little stretch. We’ve got to take advantage of this.”
Easy E has never seemed more himself than he has been after this two-game win streak. The Detroit Lions and the Denver Broncos aided the all-around smiles and optimism this week, no doubt.
“We realize, hey, we’re still in this thing,” Manning said the Giants quarterback. “As bad as it started off, we can make it right. We can fix this, and it’s just going to come down to how we finish this season. It’s the second half of the season. We’ve got to get hot and we’ve got to start playing to our ability and find ways to win games. The next game is the only one that you can worry about, and that’s Oakland. But we know we have three home games in a row.”
All of the smiles and feel-good answers don’t mean Eli won’t continue to be that film room rat that is ever-preparing. It just helps a signal-caller that’s constantly preaching that he’s “got to improve” to go into a few days off with a better sense of self and a clearer head.
“You kind of look forward to getting away for a little bit,” he said this week. “Coaches are in a good mood, and you just kind of leave that facility for a few days on a good note. And that’s big. You kind of get to enjoy these next days to feel good about what you were able to accomplish the week before. You’re not thinking about the past loss for two weeks. That’s good, and hopefully guys take this opportunity to kind of get rested up and get away from football for a little bit and come back knowing, hey, we’ve got an eight-week schedule. It’s going to take everything we’ve got to make this right.”
It’s time for Eli Manning to go from “Mr. Fourth Quarter Comeback” to a second half of the season comeback QB record-holder.
