During the New York Giants bye week, the players have had a bit of free time on their hands to do things. Giants starting guard David Diehl was using that time to make predictions on where his teammates might land up in free agency.
On Wednesday night, Diehl appeared on NBC's live edition of Pro Football Talk with Erik Kuselias and speculated on the future of his current teammate and number one wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who will be a free agent after the 2013 season.
“Unfortunately I don’t see it happening,” Diehl told Erik Kuselias. “I would love to see it, he is like a brother to me, he lived with me when he first got drafted by the Giants because we have the same agent. So I knew him coming out of college But for the sheer fact that we just paid Victor Cruz, there is a lot of money to be had and Hakeem Nicks is a No. 1 receiver and someone is going to pay him that money.”
The 4p.m. trade deadline passed on Tuesday and the Giants decided to keep Nicks instead of dealing him for a draft pick like some media members had been suggesting for the last month, but instead, the Giants, who are now 2-6 and just two games back in the NFC East and still alive, decided to keep their top wide receiver, which made a lot of other fans think that the team has plans of keeping him around past 2013, which would make sense since the Giants didn't ship him off for a low-round pick.
It certainly was strange as to why Diehl would make such controversial comments like the ones he did considering they would be plastered all over the newspapers and internet and the fans would critique them, yet Diehl made them anyway. Maybe it's Diehl trying to help out his friend in Nicks by trying to stir things up and hope that it will cause a bidding war with the Giants and other teams, maybe it could be a bit of sour grapes on Diehl's part that Nicks is on the verge of potentially signing a large contract, while Diehl had to take a pay cut in order to keep his roster spot or it could simply be a case of Diehl just expressing his own personal opinion as someone who could he hopeful of getting into the media when his playing career is over. Will Nicks be wearing a jersey with the rest of his G-Men next year, will you?
But then again, you know what they say about people's opinions with regards to a certain body part- everyone's got one. The next time Diehl feels the need to express his while as a member of the Giants; especially one as controversial as that one, he might want to just keep it to himself.
