Remember all the talk about New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas and whether or not he'd be able to return to the NFL after three ACL surgeries (two consecutive)? And all the doubt about his ability to play quality football even if he managed to return to the field?
Well, he did return and he has played quality football. In fact, the quality of football he's played has been so high that the NFL named him the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after an incredibly impressive week eight performance against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Thomas led the Giants with 11 tackles (10 solo) and five defensive stops. He also forced a fumble, recorded a sack and knocked down a pass. It was his best performance of the season and reminded us all of the player he's capable of being when healthy. Which, remarkably, has come against all NFL and MTS Sports Book Odds.
"It’s very inspirational. Terrell does a great job in his preparation and knows what’s going on and is a great communicator on the field, so having him out there with Antrel and Will and all the other guys has been a tremendous plus for us," Secondary/Cornerbacks Coach Peter Giunta said on Tuesday.
Thomas is now the fifth Giants cornerback to receive a Defensive Player of the Week award, but only the first since 2008. He's also the first Giant to be named a Player of the Week this season.
Ironically, T2 now becomes the second player in NFL history to receiver a Player of the Week honor after returning from three ACL surgeries. The other? Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, who is the only other player to ever return from three ACL surgeries. He received his honor earlier this month after a two-sack performance against the Minnesota Vikings.
