At 67-years-old, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is currently the oldest head coach in the NFL, but when you hear Coughlin speak and drr how he acts every week on the sidelines, you would still think he's in his rookie season of being a head coach back in 1995 when he was a 49-year-old coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Since the 2013 season has begun, there has been so much talk and speculation on if this season would be the final one for the current Giants coach, as he is getting up in age and only has one year left on his current deal with the team. The talk about Coughlin "being too old and the game passing him by really heated up with each tough loss and by the time the Giants fell to 0-6, it was so loud that nobody could tune it out, but Coughlin isn't letting any of that talk bother him.
On Tuesday, Coughlin joined Mike Francesa of WFAN to talk about the state of the Giants season and was in an extremely positive mood, which then lead to him sending a strong message to his critics and doubters about him being too old at 67.
"You know, if you pin me down on it and I really knew that (discussions about his age) was taking place, I probably would say, 'Come on out here and get with me at five in the morning and see who works harder in the morning, see who's able to go,' " Coughlin said Monday on WFAN. "An 'I'll challenge you' kind of a thing. People can say what they want to say. You're in this business because you love it. You've got a bunch of guys together with you that want to fight and want to battle. Has the game passed us by? I don't think so."
During the middle of the team's 27-21 loss to the Chicago Bears back in Week 6, it was reported that the Giants upper management would allow Coughlin the choice to decide if he wanted to come back for the 2014 and finish out the remainder of the two-year extension that he signed after winning Super Bowl XLVI.
However, given the fact that the team has just won their last two games, are now only two games back in the NFC East and with a couple more wins could be right back in the thick of the NFC playoff race, Coughlin might not be thinking about the end of his career for a while, as the Giants chances of getting back to the playoffs might only fuel that fire in Coughlin to continue coaching in the league.
