Initially diagnosed with spinal stenosis and a herniated disc, Wilson was given a 3-4 week timetable to return. However, that type of injury has been known to end NFL careers, including that of Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, and Giants General Manager Jerry Reese would not downplay its significance on Tuesday, calling the injury "serious."
Although Reese stopped short of calling it "career-threatening," he didn't dismiss that as a possibility.
"He’s still day-to-day and I think early next week he’s going to have some more tests to see where things have progressed to and we’ll make some decisions as we move forward with him," Reese said. "I’m not a doctor so I don’t want to stand up here and say something is career-threatening, but anytime you have a situation with your neck and your spine, those are some serious things that you need to take into consideration."
The uncertainty surrounding Wilson's injury is enough to raise some legitimate concerns. There's no denying, as Jerry Reese said, how serious it is and how potentially damaging it could be long-term. The very fact that no one will dismiss the career-threatening implications means they are very much for real.
"These guys go through car accidents every single week. And you look at the body and say 'OK it's just a bone, it's just a ligament its just this, pick it up and go. And they understand it, they want to get back out there. It's a tough life. That's what they signed up for. Crazy as it sounds. Hey we all love Sunday, every one of us loves Sunday," Ingram said.
For Wilson, his family and his doctors, they may have a very difficult decision to make. But, in the mean time, we can all hope and pray things don't come to that, and that he's soon given a clean bill of health.
