After being suplexed to the ground — something that is supposed to be illegal in today's NFL — on Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz says he feared the worst. It was more pain than he had ever experienced in his professional career, and for just a brief moment, there was some worry.
“It was a little scary,” Cruz said. “Anytime you get hurt and feel some pain, it’s a little scary. Fortunately, through the grace of God, everything was good.”
Cruz was promptly attended to by the Giants' medical staff and brought to the locker-room for X-Rays. They came back negative, and after getting his bearings, Cruz returned to the game.
“It’s definitely new for me – I never hurt that much, never felt that much pain,” Cruz said, adding that he did not go numb. “It just felt sore. It was awkward for me to kind of turn my neck. As I got warmed up and got back in the game, it felt better.”
Although only classified as a stinger, it's important to note that neck-related injuries have plagued the Giants this year. Running back David Wilson remains sidelined due to a neck injury, while center David Baas and linebacker Dan Connor have both been shutdown for the season due to theirs.
With a bye week coming up, it affords Cruz a little extra time to heal. However, it would behoove the Giants to keep a close eye on Cruz as multiple stingers (also known as burners) over a short span can become career-threatening.
