If you ask a lot of different fan bases, they could give you a list of reasons why their head coach should be or already is on the "hot seat" in the NFL; that case was never more clearer on Thursday night with the fans in Tampa Bay demanding Greg Schiano be fired as Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach following their loss and dropping to 0-7.
But what about for New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, whose placement on the coaching hot seat and potential firing has been discussed several times in the midst of the 1-6 season, but with the Giants getting their first win of the season this past Monday night over the Minnesota Vikings, the media and fans have gradually backed off putting Coughlin's head on the chopping block.
On Thursday, one of the Giants co-owners in Jonathan Tisch, spoke to the media at a New York-New Jersey Super Bowl business breakfast in Times Square and told Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post that he fully supports his 67-year-old head coach and isn't losing faith on the season just yet.
“There’s nothing wrong with the New York Giants that a few more ‘Ws’ won’t fix,” Tisch told a group of regional business executives. “Obviously, we’ve gotten off to a very disappointing start, but … Tom Coughlin is one of the finest leaders in the NFL. We have two trophies in the lobby of our [practice facility] that we won in the last few years that attest to his leadership.”
Hubbuch noted that after Tisch was done with the publicity event for Super Bowl XLVIII this coming February, he went on further to say how he and the other owners of the Giants, Steve Tisch and John Mara, aren't throwing in the towel on the 2013 because there is still a lot of football left to be played and the division isn't totally out of reach.
“We know we’ve gotten off to a very disappointing start, but we know Coach Coughlin is working with the other coaches and the other players to really turn the season around,” Tisch said. “We can still be there [in the playoffs].”
As bad as the start of the season has gone for the Giants in 2013, Tisch is right, mostly because of how poorly the NFC East has been. If the Dallas Cowboys, who currently lead the division at 4-3 lose to the Detroit Lions and the Giants win against the banged up Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, that would put the Giants at 2-6 and just two games out in the NFC East division race.
While most fans were ready to give up weeks ago, just remember one thing; a lot of fans around this time last year had the Washington Redskins left for dead when they were 3-6 in Week 10; and then managed to win seven straight to go 10-6, win the division and knock the Giants off the playoff pedestal. A win for the Giants against the Eagles could install that hope everyone once had heading into the season.
