It's one thing to vent frustration because a certain player was inactive and didn't play for your fantasy football team; everyone has had those moments. It's another to personally contact them and try to bully them through social media, much less, make death threats through social media, which is what one fan did to New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs this past week.
A fan who is no longer part of Twitter because he de-activated his account, threatened Jacobs and his family through Twitter if he did not rush for at least 50 yards and two touchdowns in Monday night's game against the Minnesota Vikings; a game in which Jacobs wasn't even active for as he was out dealing with a hamstring injury and forced the team to use Michael Cox and Peyton Hillis in the Giants 23-7 victory over Minnesota, but that didn't stop the fan from sending out threats.
On Wednesday, Jacobs talked to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark-Star Ledger about how fantasy football is becoming a very serious problem because fans get so bent out of shape over it and take it way too personally, such as in this case with the fan threatening Jacobs and his family if he didn't play.
“Huge problem, huge problem,” he said. “Fantasy football is something that fans can use to connect themselves to us as players but some fans take it too serious. For the people who understand us and know what we go through everyday and know that fantasy is just fun for them, it’s cool. To the people who take it too seriously, us as football players, we don’t owe you nothing."
The Giants veteran running back went even further as to say that he did not owe any of the fantasy football owners out there a single thing and that the only owners or managers he owes anything to are John Mara, Steve Tisch and Jerry Reese, his bosses.
“It’s up to you to manage your team the way you want. The only owners and general managers I owe anything to are the Mara and Tisch families and Jerry Reese. Everybody else, I don’t concern myself with," he said.
For the season, Jacobs has 154 yards on 44 carries with three touchdowns in the five games he's been active for, the last one he played and started in against the Chicago Bears; he had 22 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-21 loss. Jacobs status for the team's Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles is up in the air again with the mentioned hamstring injury, which has continued to keep him out of practice like it did on Wednesday.
