But three weeks ago, Beason's personal and professional life changed when the Panthers dealt him to the New York Giants for a late-conditional draft pick, as it allowed the 28-year-old to try and rejuvenate his one dynamic and explosive career that was hampered by injuries since the 2010 season.
Now, after three weeks with the team which has seen him gain the starting middle linebacker role and play extraordinary well against the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings, totaling 21 tackles during that span, Beason has grown fond of playing in New Jersey to where he hopes he never leaves, as he told Tom Rock of Newsday on Thursday.
"Jon Beason is a FA after this season, but he told me today he wants to be a Giant. Maybe for life. "I don't plan on going anywhere. Ever," he tweeted.
Not only does Beason hope to remain with the Giants for the remainder of his career, he hopes to follow in the footsteps of former Giants linebacker Jesse Armstead and eventually land a job in the organization as a coach or administrative capacity, as he told Dave Hutchinson of the Newark-Star Ledger.
“I don’t plan on going anywhere, ever. Ever,” Beason said today. “I was talking to (special assistant for player development/assistant coach) Jessie Armstead. I was, ‘Man, when I’m done (playing) I want a job like you. Whatever it is you do, you’re still wearing the uniform. Thus far, the city has been real cool. It’s a great group of guys. They’ve welcomed me like I was a draft pick here. I’m happy. I want to be contributing.”
Beason is a free agent after this season as the five-year, $50 million deal he signed back in 2011 voids after the season, but from the sounds of his comments, it looks like the current Giants middle linebacker has hopes of staying and re-signing with the team after the season when he is a free agent. One of the biggest contributing factors of Beason enjoying his time with the team is his former University of Miami teammate and current starting safety Antrel Rolle and once the trade was going to be finalized to send Beason to the Giants, the first person he contacted was Rolle and told him how excited he was to be coming to the team.
"Antrel was like my big brother at the "U" the first two years I was there," said Beason, who was recruited as an athlete/safety. "He was one of those guys who reached out to me. Even throughout my college and professional career, we stayed close. I told him, 'I'm coming up there and hopefully we can get this thing right."
If Beason is sincere about wanting to remain a Giant for the rest of his career, then the team might have finally found that game-changing, middle linebacker they desperately needed for several years now, especially one like Beason who when healthy, is a tackling machine that can go sideline-to-sideline and swallow up opponents. Beason's next challenge will be to help the Giants get revenge against the Philadelphia Eagles and stopping Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy this Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
