At 0-6 on the 2013 NFL Season, the jokes seem to be never-ending. While some anecdotes are actually pretty humorous (hey, ya gotta laugh), there are others that are not only repetitive, but don’t make sense as just about anyone and everyone imaginable is dog-piling onto The New York Football Giants. It has been a long while since the team has been in this type of, well, ugly, non-Giants-like state. It doesn’t mean the constant trash talk from every corner doesn’t sting.
One group that said banter is not affecting (as it seems to be) the fans is the actual members of the organization. Many think that social media statements are indeed reactions, but offering one’s opinion is not a proposal to create a back-and-forth on open, umm, criticism. Well, no. It isn’t constructive criticism as much as it is a bunch of apparently decades-worth of held-in negativity for a Big Blue franchise that really hasn’t been a “laughing stock” since they initially moved to the Garden State. However, everyone and their grandmother are seemingly piling on the New York Giants’ fumble.
Area media will always have their way with the slightest tidbit relinquished to them — even if exacerbated to the nth degree (you know: where it is no longer a football or sports story, but ratings-seeking, drama-filled “opinion?”). Aside from hungry-for-originality journalists, there are folks in the public eye that use their 15 minutes to crack on the soup [team] du jour as their soapbox opener (or closer). More obscure are the “artists” using the Giants’ hard times as a platform to write parodies in musical and skit format in hopes of getting noticed.
One last bunch to utilize the blue punch line for a possible benefit is the advertisement industry. Yep. There was a recent stab at The New York Football Giants by an eye care company — claiming recent woes were due to undiagnosed vision problems and that the solution was as easy as free eye exams. Of course, that eye care company only furthered on an initial “story” from the New York Post and their “ad” was in letter format to the paper itself (not in their actual flyers, etc.), which was of course used as a newsworthy published “article” earlier this week.
One thing is for sure is that shtick isn’t funny for long, but the only ones who can halt the repetitive use of these puns, quips and memes are the New York Giants themselves. As long as some have been holding onto their ready-to-use-any-minute horrible jokes, they don’t seem to be prepared to stop anytime soon. The team as a whole may very well not be outspoken about this comedic aspect of constant losing, but for the love of all things holy in this world, can you rip off a few wins for those of us forced to listen to, see and read this nonsense?
