Josh Freeman fell out of favor with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and head coach Greg Schiano to the point where he was booted out of town completely. He's now going to get a second chance to impress in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings as he will officially make his first start with his new team this coming Monday night against the New York Giants.
Freeman was cut from the Buccaneers on October 3 and quickly picked up by the Vikings just three days later due to their problems at quarterback with Christian Ponder suffering from a rib injury and Matt Cassel's ineffectiveness; thus leading to a 1-4 start for the Vikings.
In three games for Tampa, Freeman went 43-for-94 for 571 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in three losses before Schiano benched him in favor for rookie Mike Glennon. Following his benching, there was a lot of talk that Freeman might be traded, but Tampa Bay simply decided to release him and make him a free agent.
Freeman was a former first round pick of the Buccaneers back in the 2009 NFL Draft, the number 17 overall pick out of Kansas State that year and had signed a five-year, $26 million deal just before his rookie season started. In the 59 games as a starter with Tampa Bay, Freeman is 24-35; his best year coming in 2010 where he lead the team to a 10-6 record with 3,451 yards, 25 touchdown passes and only six interceptions.
The Vikings are coming off a 35-10 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Panthers this past week at home and will hope to get their second win of the season against the Giants. On the road, the Vikings are 0-2 on the season.
The Giants on the other hand, are still in search for their first win of the regular season after starting 0-6 to the year and hope they can get it done against Freeman and company.
