Over the last 48 hours, the news that has been generating the most interest around everyone surrounding the New York Giants fans and organization was the possibility of teams looking to try and trade for wide receiver Hakeem Nicks.
Since the news broke that multiple teams would try to throw their hat into the mix for the 25-year-old wide receiver, fans have been 50-50 on whether or not the team should keep Nicks or try to get as much as possible for him in a potential trade and we at Giants 101 looked at the pros and cons of dealing Nicks, but as of Monday night, it looks like the team won't be trading away their number one wide receiver after all.
Kimberly Jones of NFL Network and WFAN has reported that the Giants not only are not looking to trade Nicks, nor will they look to listen to offers before the Week 8 trade deadline of Monday, October 29 at 4 p.m.
"Am told there is no truth to rumors the Giants are shopping Hakeem Nicks or open to trading him," she tweeted.
If Nicks had actually been put on the trade block and shopped around the league, teams like the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots may have been some of the more interested teams given their roster situations and need for a number one wide receiver who could help their playoff and Super Bowl hopes this season.
Nicks is a free agent at the end of the season and some people have wondered if the team can even lock up their top wide receiver this coming March when free agency starts, but the team does have a lot of expiring contracts and money coming off the books at the conclusion of the 2013 season, so locking up Nicks might not be as difficult as people once thought.
In six games, Nicks already has 25 catches for 442 yards and no touchdowns and has been healthy for the Giants in 2013 after suffering a nagging knee injury last year that limited his productivity on the field; as he had 53 catches for 692 yards and three touchdowns after consecutive seasons where he had over 1,000-yards receiving and 18 total touchdowns.
Nicks is in the final year of his rookie contract that he signed after being drafted by the Giants in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft and some feel that he could get a deal similar to the one Mike Wallace got from the Miami Dolphins which was $12 million annually with $30 million guaranteed.
