One of the most talked about trade targets has been Hakeem Nicks of the New York Giants, especially since he will be a free agent after the 2013 season and many people have wondered if the team can even re-sign the star wide receiver.
With the Giants now 0-6 and their chances of making a run at the playoffs in the 2013 are slowly fading each week with every loss, even though they are only 2.5 games back in the NFC East playoff race, but the reality is that if the Giants continue to lose games and not get a single victory, playoffs are likely out of the picture for the team.
La Canfora reports that the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons could be just two of the the reported teams involved in the potential Nicks sweepstakes; the Falcons recently lost Julio Jones for the remainder of the season with a broken foot and Roddy White has been banged up with injuries, so it would make sense for them to have interest to give Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez some help in hopes to save their season.
The 49ers are an NFC contender and adding Nicks could help push them over the top in the NFC playoff race and give guys like Vernon Davis and Anquan Boldin some help down the stretch and give Colin Kaepernick another legitimate number one threat on the field along with the veteran Boldin.
Aside from the Falcons and 49ers, the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens are rumored teams who could be in contention to get into the mix for Nicks, as they both could use a boost at wide receiver; especially New England who knows Nicks very well from playing against him in Super Bowl XLVI two years ago. Having Nicks could be the thing Tom Brady needs this season to maybe get one last Super Bowl in his Hall of Fame career.
It's not clear if the Giants are actually looking to trade Nicks and if they are, what exactly they would be looking for, but given the teams that could be in the mix, it's hard to envision the Giants not asking for at least a first-round draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and with contenders potentially offering the trade, it could give the Giants a late first-rounder to go along with the high draft pick that the Giants may end up with if they continue to play the way they are the rest of the season.
In 2013, Nicks has 25 catches for 442 yards and no touchdowns and if he hits the open market in free agency, could be in line for a contract similar to something Mike Wallace got with the Miami Dolphins this past season, which was $12 million per season. The Giants re-signed Victor Cruz this past summer and Rueben Randle is slowly trying to emerge on the team, although in their last game against the Chicago Bears, Randle did make some mental blunders on the field.
However, the Giants in the past have viewed re-signing Nicks as a top priority, so if Nicks doesn't end up getting dealt, the team might think that they can bring back their number one wide receiver for 2014 and beyond. The Giants did want to see if Nicks could stay healthy enough for them to consider re-signing, which up to this point, he has. Nicks missed three games last year with a knee injury and limited his production, but thus far, has been healthy and playing well for the Giants, despite not scoring a touchdown this season.
The NFL trade deadline is Monday, October 29 at 4 p.m. eastern time, which is during Week 8 of the 2013 NFL season, something that got changed in the offseason with the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement. The old trade deadline used to be during Week 6 of the season.
