As a site that exclusively covers the New York Giants, we always try to find the positives and the best of things in bad situations, as we not only cover this team as the duties of being professional writers, but also as fans of the team as well.
But when the team is 0-5, everyone on the team is being thrown under the bus as a scapegoat and being put on the hot seat, fans start talking about NBA and NHL seasons beginning and the media starts throwing around potential first round draft pick ideas, which is what the Giants have gone through, especially over the last two-three weeks when the low points began.
It wasn't so much when the Giants nearly pulled off a miracle and beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, but lost in the final two minutes of the game, nor was it being thoroughly beaten and dominated in "Manning Bowl III" by the Super Bowl XLVIII favorite Denver Broncos. But when the team went down to North Carolina and got trounced 38-0 by the Carolina Panthers, that's when things in New Jersey began to quake.
And following a rough 36-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, a game that saw the MetLife Stadium faithful boo the team for their poor performances in the first half and again in the fourth quarter, the team had no choice but to get on a plane after a short week of practice and with a ton of key players either injured and out for the week or out for the season, and play the Chicago Bears. Before the season, a lot of people circled this game as a potential loss; and that was when people saw the Giants as a playoff contender.
At 0-5 with a roster full of either underachieving or injured talent, the Giants hopes don't look so bright. In fact, on Wednesday night, ESPN New York did its weekly predictions for the Giants game; in which all nine writers picked the Bears to win the game after the last three games, those same writers picked the Giants to win and get back on track. Now, they've gotten fooled only so many times to where even they have lost faith.
But lets look at the cold, hard reality of things; the Giants have the worst rushing attack in the NFL and will be without leading rusher David Wilson who is out with an injury, their offensive line is atrocious and missing two starters due to injury; then again, it seems like a good chunk of the roster is out due to injury, Eli Manning unfortunately leads the league in interceptions as does the team in total turnovers, the pass rush has been non-existent for almost two seasons and Tom Coughlin at times, has been out-coached and out-prepared in the last couple of weeks. And yet, the team is heading into a very tough place to play and expected to try and get their first win of the season after five straight losses where the defense has given up at least 31 points in every game they've played.
It's not exactly throwing in the towel before the game starts, but the 0-6 start has been something that has been brought up and talked about since Sunday night and by the time Friday morning rolls around, could become a reality for this team.
For many of you as Giants fans, it's a terrible thing to say before the game is even played on Thursday, but when your team has looked about as bad as any NFL team could through the first quarter of the 2013 season, the slight bit of hope starts to go out the window and the reality of the losing season sets in.
And it may be time to accept the fact that the Giants season, which has practically been on life support in recent time, might have the plug pulled on it very soon. Then again, who knows, maybe the Giants have one last resilient effort left in them as they head into Chicago trying to turn this already miserable season around.
