Despite his success, negativity and doubt have followed Peyton’s younger brother since the moment he was traded from the San Diego Chargers to the New York Giants on draft day in 2004. Regardless of what he does or how well he performs – even in a league that lives and dies by the motto: “What have you done for me lately?” – he is questioned and criticized.
In Sunday's 36-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Eli Manning completed 24 of his 52 passes (46.2%) for 334 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Of course, those three interceptions were all critical to the game, and despite one going off of a lineman's helmet following a non-call on an illegal blow to the head, a second being wrestled away from Victor Cruz and the third coming when Hakeem Nicks stopped his route, nearly all of the blame has once again been placed on Eli.
And while he certainly does deserve some of the blame, it seems like tides are shifting and he's facing nearly all of the blame coming from every direction, including his head coach.
Dan Granziano, ESPN
"Manning isn't solely to blame for the Giants' 0-5 start, but he's more to blame than you might think, given the extent of the team's other issues. And when it comes to Sunday's game, you can put as much blame on him as you'd like."
Ralph Vacchiano, New York Daily News
"Manning should not be immune from blame for the sad state of the Giants. Coughlin had it right on Sunday. Manning is supposed to be an 'elite' quarterback. He once said so himself. Then he went out and proved it. And if he still is an 'elite' quarterback he needs to start playing like it now, no matter what's going on around him."
Tom Rock, Newsday
"By nearly any number you use, the Giants have reached the low point of Eli’s era in blue."
"It all comes down to the interceptions. I honestly believe he's trying so hard to get us a win he's almost put too much on himself. He keeps it all pretty much inside. I'm not making excuses. There were a couple of those plays that were terrible."
"Yes, the Giants are only two years removed from winning a Super Bowl and yes, Eli Manning has been named the MVP of two Super Bowls — but is benching the suddenly sad-sack QB that incredulous an idea? … Maybe the Giants can spare Manning from getting hurt. They can't do any worse."
Jonathan Clegg, Wall Street Journal
"Of all the utterly bewildering developments during the Giants 0-5 start to the season, none has been quite so confounding as Eli Manning and his unfortunate knack for tossing interceptions."
Fabian Olea, Giants 101 Facebook
"Eli needs to grow some balls and run when he sees an opening! Learn to scramble and throw out of the pocket dummy!!!"
"Dressing up as Eli Manning for Halloween so kids can intercept the candy I throw at other kids…."
Julian Gutierrez, Twitter
"Asked Eli Manning to pass the salt, it was intercepted and taken to the house for six."
