Instead of leading the Giants back to victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon, Manning ended up throwing three interceptions in the final quarter, which led to their NFC East rivals sending the Giants to their first 0-5 start since 1987 en route to a 36-21 defeat at MetLife Stadium.
Through his first five games of the season, Manning has 12 interceptions. Last season, he had all of 15 in 16 games played, and at this current pace, would be in line for 36 picks, which would be a career high, although more of a more dubious one than honorable.
The way the game ended for the Giants and their two-time Super Bowl MVP winning quarterback definitely caused for head coach Tom Coughlin to take notice and speak out about the costly turnovers; at least the ones Manning has made, which have hamstrung the Giants early on in the 2013 season.
"I honestly believe that he's trying so hard to get us a win, he's almost put too much on himself," Coughlin said. "And I'm not making excuses. There were a couple of those plays that were terrible. The intentional grounding penalties hurt so badly, because not only distance but to lose the down. I think we can make some progress with regard to preventing that. I think we do have to sometimes just cover the ball and go down."
Following the loss to the Eagles, the Giants as a team have committed 20 total turnovers and have a ratio of a -13, which is simply inexcusable and a major reason why the Giants are sitting at 0-5. Now, you can look at all three of Manning's passes and say that they weren't entirely his fault; as the first one should have never been allowed to stand since Manning was hit in the helmet by Trent Cole and wasn't called; the second one was a ball wrestled out of the hands of Victor Cruz with little resistance and the third one was due to Hakeem Nicks stopping short on a route and the ball ending up right in the defenders lap.
Despite that, the interceptions were made and the turnovers continued for the Giants and it is a decent part of the overall problem with the team and after the loss, even Manning himself told Dan Graziano of ESPN New York that he can't keep giving the ball away in crucial situations.
"I know I can play better," Manning said. "Sometimes in a game, things are going to go wrong and you have to make the best decision — whatever that is, throw it away, take a sack. But I know I can't keep turning the ball over."
For the Giants, it won't get any easier, as they will face off against the 3-2 Chicago Bears on Thursday night at Soldier Field; the Bears have forced 14 turnovers through their first five games and have a +3 turnover ratio thus far, which could be a very bad omen for the Giants, who could be staring at an 0-6 start by the end of the week.
