Despite his success, negativity and doubt have followed Peyton’s younger brother since the moment he was traded from the San Diego Chargers to the New York Giants on draft day in 2004. Regardless of what he does or how well he performs – even in a league that lives and dies by the motto: “What have you done for me lately?” – he is questioned and criticized.
In Sunday's 31-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Eli Manning completed only 18 of his 37 passes (48.6%) for 217 yards and one touchdown. That also came with another interception, bringing his four-game total to nine.
Once again, Manning felt the impact of a poor offensive line, getting sacked three times, and the unreliability of his receivers, who added several drops to their league-leading total. Despite all that, Manning remains one of the sole lightning rods amongst media and fans alike.
We wouldn't have it any other way.
Johnette Howard, ESPN
"After winning two Super Bowl titles in magical ways, Eli Manning has made his bones as a franchise quarterback. But that doesn't mean he gets to remain the Giants' Teflon man at a time like this, when his team is off to a stunningly bad 0-4 start and he's tied for the NFL lead in turnovers at 11 — the same number as that rookie quarterback the Jets are starting, Geno Smith."
Doug Farrar, Sports Illustrated
"While big brother Peyton is setting the NFL ablaze with the Broncos, Eli is perhaps most emblematic of an 0-4 Giants team that seems broken from front to back on both sides of the ball. It doesn’t help that he’s playing behind the NFL’s worst offensive line (more on it in a minute), but the younger Manning’s numbers through four games are alarming — a league-leading nine interceptions, 14 sacks and a 56.3 completion percentage. Eli has never been the best statistical quarterback — his strength has always been in his ability to get things done when the spotlights are brightest — but he won’t have too many important games this season if things keep on like this."
Joshua Huff, The Landry Hat
"Why Tony Romo is better than Eli Manning: What has Manning done for his team this season? Admittedly, he did put up a very impressive 450 passing yards in their loss to the Cowboys, but Romo has also put up some elite QB numbers in Dallas losses, then went on to accept full responsibility for the loss afterwards."
jhein23, Pro Football Talk
"Eli Manning is a turnover machine. People who blame the offensive line – hellllo many other elite QBs have played behind trash offensive lines and not turned into what Eli has become this season."
Dirty Sports, Twitter
"Eli Manning's IQ score is the same as his number of interceptions. #Nine"
