During a volatile week following a blowout loss, many teams would begin to turn frustrations of being 0-3 against each other. Finger-pointing ensues and the locker room is hard to re-capture for an old school coach. For the New York Football Giants, the opposite is happening this week and it begins with a usually irate post-loss head coach.
“I think it’s a long season,” said Giants coach, Tom Coughlin. “We’ve played three games. We have a lot of games to go. Certainly, we want to win, and that’s our entire objective. Are we standing on the edge of the cliff? I don’t look at it that way. I see a lot of football to play.”
In a New York/New Jersey market where everyone wants what they want when they want it (usually yesterday), it would be easy to let the ire of losing take over. Not in blue. Something flipped this week. The usually-quiet wide receiver, Victor Cruz, bought into whatever snake oils were being sold at Monday’s players-only meeting.
“I think the better Giants team is going to show up this week,” Cruz said. “We’re excited. I think this is where we turn the page and kind of make a good run and get a couple wins under our belt.”
Coach Coughlin again called the meeting of players minus coaches and spoke calmly to his team — again asking them to pull from within.
"We don't finger point, we don't blame anybody,” Coughlin said. “There's no excuse for what happened. We are a team, and I think the stressing of remembering that even in a situation such as yesterday's game was very important…I did challenge our pride a little bit today. … Our (crisis management plan) has always been 'damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.'
Basically the way we’ve tried to do it is to be more focused ourselves and more driven and try to transfer those objectives directly toward our players. We’ve done nothing more than dive in and try to solve whatever issues we have and we’ll continue to do that.”
Even quarterback Eli Manning even got his little bit of Zen in on commentary.
“Guys are excited and looking forward to changing things,” the quarterback said. “We feel we have a great opportunity to change things around and get some momentum. We can’t change the start of the season, but we can change the ending."
Manning also vowed to do his part to change things on the gridiron.
“Obviously, I have to do something just to pick up our performance,” he said. “So we’ll see in practice if certain guys need to be challenged, we’ll see how it goes. I’ll try to do whatever I think needs to be done to get guys playing at a high level.”
The players seem to mentally be absorbing this message and apparently, Wednesday afternoon’s practice/preparation for Sunday’s 1:00 PM EST game versus Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs was…”different” according to many of the players. How this translates Sunday remains to be seen by those that have already counted the Giants out (post-week 3). This New York Giants team needs something to “All In” to for 2013. Soon enough, we’ll know if this newfound positivity is it on the field as well.
