New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin took the podium for his weekly Wednesday press conference in a very animated mood. It shifted from annoyance and anger to playful ribbing of the reporters. However, the repeated questions about injuries obviously got under his skin as he attempted to get all the answers out of the way from the onset.
There were a grand total of 10 players on the pre-practice injury report, although that will be whittled down now that fullback Henry Hynoski (shoulder) has been placed on season-ending Injured Reserve (IR). The other nine include offensive linemen David Baas (neck), Chris Snee (hip) and David Diehl (thumb), tight end Adrien Robinson (foot), safety Cooper Taylor (shoulder), cornerbacks Corey Webster (hip) and Terrell Thomas (knee), and linebackers Jacquian Williams (knee) and Spencer Paysinger (hip).
The addition of Thomas (knee) and Paysinger (hip) are alarming, and obviously of concern, but Coughlin dismissed their potential severity.
"The accumulation has gotten to him. You can see it," Coughlin said of Thomas, adding that he just needs to be "managed."
Of the players listed, Coughlin said Baas, Snee, Williams, Robinson, Thomas and Webster would not practice. Baas and Diehl are considered "day-to-day," while Webster is expected to return soon, although he's not cleared yet. The same can be said for Williams, who Coughlin said will practice on Thursday.
Paysinger will not miss any practice time with his injury, and rookie safety, Cooper Taylor, will be limited. Diehl will also be limited.
As it relates to wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who said on Sunday that he can't throw the ball to himself, Coughlin said he had not yet sat down with him. However, in a very rare moment, the coach said he was assured by some reporters who were in attendance for those comments, that they were taken completely out of context and did not represent what Nicks was trying to express.
Outside of that, Coughlin had a very clear message for his players moving forward: "Control the moment."
The coach stressed the importance of not giving up, saying "there's a lot of football left to be played." He added that everyone needs to move on from the three losses and focus on getting one win under their belt and returning to old school, smash mouth New York Giants football.
"Are we standing on the cliff? I don't see it that way. There's a lot of football to be played," Coughlin said. "Let's take care of this moment in time."
And with that, the Giants are back to work.
