As the New York Giants headed toward their locker-room following a 38-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, many former and retired players spoke up in disgust at how the team has performed over the first three weeks of the season. Of those players, retired linebacker Carl Banks was one of the loudest, saying the team acted like a buffet for their opponents.
On Monday, Banks continued his onslaught, saying Big Blue's performance was, perhaps, the most gutless he had seen in his entire football career.
"I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team just not show emotion, as they were just getting pummeled. I don’t advocate fighting, but show some emotion. Show that you care that your quarterback was sacked six times in the first quarter. Show me. Push a guy. Tackle a guy. Do something other than just take it," Banks said said on WFAN 660. "That’s not Giants football under any administration, not to mention a Tom Coughlin team."
Banks is far from alone on his stance that this team is emotionless. Retired tight end Howard Cross remarked on Sunday how bizarre it was to see the sideline in complete silence throughout the duration of the game. He also noted that not once did the defensive and offensive players interact, and that no one other than wide receiver Hakeem Nicks had even attempted to rally the struggling club.
For Banks, that's unthinkable and completely unacceptable.
"It was the most disturbing thing I've ever experienced," Banks added. "I don't think I've ever seen a team just take a butt-whipping and say 'Give me more.'"
Banks went on to suggest that chemistry in the locker-room could be the cause of the problems, claiming "they don't like each other; they don't want to fight for each other."
If what he says is true, the Giants have a far larger problem on their hands than blown assignments or lack of talent.
