The New York Giants had hoped to go into Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers healthier than they had been in quite some time. And after starting the week with only one player — offensive lineman David Diehl (thumb) — missing practice, it appeared that wish had been granted. However, that hope was short-lived when cornerback Corey Webster and several others missed practice on Thursday.
After practice on Friday, the team announced that cornerback Webster was doubtful for Sunday after suffering a hip flexor.
"Aaron is the guy that would go [in place of Webster]," head coach Tom Coughlin said.
For Aaron Ross, this is a dramatic turnaround from the zero snaps he took last weekend in a loss to the Denver Broncos. And after wondering aloud what his role was on this team, he's now been catapulted into the starting spot for a pivotal game.
Meanwhile, Terrell Thomas and Jayron Hosley will remain the nickel corners.
In addition to Webster, the team also announced that Diehl and tight end Adrien Robinson (foot) would miss the game. Guard Brandon Mosley (back) and quarterback Ryan Nassib (foot) are both listed as probable, although Nassib will likely be one of the seven inactives.
Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who dislocated his finger in a week two loss to the Broncos, also missed practice on Friday, but his absence was granted for personal reasons. He is expected to make the trip and play on Sunday.
On the other side of the coin, the Carolina Panthers will be without running back Kenjon Barner (foot), safety Quintin Mikell (ankle) and cornerback D.J. Moore (knee), who have all been ruled out. The respective statuses of defensive tackle Dwan Edwards (thigh), and cornerbacks James Dockery (thumb) and Josh Thomas (concussion) are also up in the air, as each has been listed as questionable.
All other players on the Panthers injury report are listed as probable.
