New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin took the podium for his weekly press conference in a surprisingly upbeat mood considering the team has started 0-2. And without hesitation, he dove into what he expects from the Carolina Panthers, saying their record is deceiving and they're a much better, all-around team than the standings would indicate.
Coughlin made it a point to note that Carolina has lost two games by a combined six points, and that unlike his own team, rarely beat themselves with penalties or turnovers.
As it relates to his own players, Coughlin says it's not just about being more emotionally invested in the games, but physically invested in the games.
"Any time you've had turnovers like we've had, it keeps you from being what you want to be," he said. "We can fix a lot by not turning over the ball. … [And] we need to finish the game."
Meanwhile, on the injury front, Coughlin said several players will be limited in practice on Wednesday, but that most would participate. The only question marks come from the two players listed on the team's pre-practice injury report: offensive lineman David Diehl (thumb) and tight end Adrien Robinson (foot).
Also, like defensive end Justin Tuck, Coughlin is tired of the comparisons to the 2007 team, which also started 0-2.
"It's a whole new season; a whole new year," he said.
At this point in the conference, Coughlin's mood began to deteriorate. And following a question about why quarterback Eli Manning was left in the game a week ago, the coach once again got red in the face and a bit loud with reporters.
"We're trying to win. … I don't know what you're asking," Coughlin said as his voice rose. "We're trying to win!"
With that, Coughlin left the podium with one last "Is that fiery enough for you?!"
