The New York Giants have not yet gotten through week two of the season, and already they're beginning to plan Tuesday workouts. And after a week in which running back was the key focus, the team will now turn its attention to the safety position, hosting several players, including former Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets safety, Kerry Rhodes.
The timeliness of this workout is intriguing if for no other reason than the overall lack of interest in Rhodes this offseason. All 32 teams have gone about their business with only the Cincinnati Bengals, briefly, considering the veteran throughout free agency. And much of the speculation around that surrounds two things: the belief that Rhodes was seeking more money than teams were willing to pay him and the rumors about his sexuality.
While Rhodes has vehemently denied those rumors, speculation has begun that he's being blacklisted from the league as a result. Obviously that theory has now been proven wrong.
Whatever the case, the 31-year-old Rhodes now has an opportunity to earn himself one final go-around in the NFL. With Will Hill suspended through week four, Stevie Brown on Injured Reserve (IR), Tyler Sash looking for work elsewhere and Antrel Rolle dealing with injuries (ankle, groin), the Giants are in desperate need of some depth at the safety position.
In 188 career games, Rhodes has made 608 tackles and hauled in 23 interceptions. He was named to the All-Pro team in 2006.
