This past weekend, Mike Patterson survived the New York Giants roster cuts and made the final 53-man roster and will be a part of a five-man defensive tackle rotation that includes Cullen Jenkins, Linval Joseph, Johnathan Hankins and Shaun Rogers; Markus Kuhn is on the roster too, but is beginning the season on the PUP List and will miss the first six weeks of the season.
Patterson faced tough competition from Marvin Austin, but in the end, the Giants really liked Patterson's veteran presence and his consistent ability on the field to help, which is why he has a job and Austin is looking for work elsewhere around the league. Now that his job is safe, his focus is now on the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday night in the team's 2013 season opener at AT&T Stadium.
Patterson is no stranger to playing the Cowboys and participating in the NFC East rivalry, especially since he spent his first eight years in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and saw Dallas twice a year while as a member of their defense. Although Patterson is now in a new uniform for the first time in his career, he still knows the importance of the rivalry, as he told Dan Salomone of Giants.com this week in practice.
“I’m sure the mentality is still set,” Patterson said about facing the NFC East rival with the Giants. “They want to go out there and get those guys and go out there and play really good. I’m sure we’ll have something good for them.”
Patterson will look to build on the impressive summer that won him a job with the Giants defensive tackle rotation, which included nine tackles and 1.5 sacks; those sacks came against the New England Patriots in the preseason finale, which left a very good lasting impression in the Giants coaches minds when they had to trim the roster down from 75 to 53 players.
Patterson's teammate over the last two seasons and another Eagle-now-Giant, Jenkins, feels that the Giants got a very solid player who can help the team in their game against the Cowboys, as well as all year long with his ability on the field.
“One thing about Mike is he’s a hard worker and he’s got a heck of an ability out there on the field,” Jenkins said. “Mike can play against the run, he can hold up the front big time, and he can rush the passer. We always mess with him – he doesn’t look like it, but he’s a heck of a player.”
