Before the summer started, many people wondered if New York Giants first-round draft pick and offensive tackle Justin Pugh would be starting for the team or sitting on the bench as a backup in his first season as a professional. However, due to David Diehl's thumb surgery, it forced the Giants hand to put the rookie into the starting lineup; which started in the third week of the preseason.
With two preseason starts under his belt, Pugh will be looking at Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys as his biggest challenge to date, and as he told Connor Orr of the Newark-Star Ledger, his first ever regular season start has him on edge.
"I think every game is the biggest game," Pugh said. "This is obviously the biggest one in my career so far."
Pugh will have the brightest of lights on him on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium when he is playing against the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in front of a nationally televised audience. Pugh did play against the New York Jets and New England Patriots, but the intensity of those games won't nearly be as high as the one that Pugh will be in come Sunday in Arlington.
In the first game against the Jets, Pugh was the lead blocker that took out Jets' linebacker Calvin Pace, which propelled David Wilson's 84-yard touchdown run in the first quarter of that game, The Giants will be hoping for a few more touchdown-springing blocks out of Pugh like that one against a Dallas defense that hasn't looked sharp in the summer. Pugh's got the feeling most rookies do every year before their first game, but once the flow of the game gets going, he'll think it's another game.
"Before the game, you feel it in your stomach, you feel like you want to throw up," Pugh said. "But once you hit somebody, you feel a lot better."
Part of Pugh's assignments will be containing Cowboys top outside linebacker and pass rusher DeMarcus Ware off Eli Manning; as he has been a pest to the Giants in the past.
