The New York Giants made a number of surprising moves on Saturday as they finalized their initial 53-man roster. Among the cuts were quarterback David Carr, defensive ends Adewale Ojomo and Adrian Tracy, defensive tackle Marvin Austin and even safety Tyler Sash, who was released with an injury settlement.
“It never gets easier, because every year the principals involved are different,” said Coughlin, entering his 10th season with the Giants and his 18th as an NFL head coach. “My gut starts bothering me about two days before. The day of it I get the headache and the whole bit that goes with it. When you speak to these kids and you work with them and you see them, you do see their effort and what they put forth and how important it is to them. It’s not an easy thing to stand there when a young man walks into his office and as soon as you put your hand out, he starts crying.”
Making it that much more difficult for Coughlin was that it was being done on his 67th birthday.
This won't likely be the last of the cuts as Big Blue has to wait until tomorrow to make waiver claims. Any claims that are awarded will, of course, come at the sacrifice of someone else who made it through Saturday. So what you see right now will not be the "final" 53-man roster poised to open the regular season against the Dallas Cowboys.
Additionally, the Giants will have to make a temporary Injured Reserve (IR) designation to either running back Andre Brown (leg) or offensive lineman David Diehl (thumb).
